“Resonating Roots” is a documentary series delving into the tapestry of cultural unity through Qawwali, as South Asian Americans collaborate with gospel, jazz, mariachi, and Kathak (dance) artists. With the backdrop of America’s South, the series celebrates the resilience and creativity of BIPOC communities in a region historically marked by racial tensions and conservatism.

Episode 1 : Qawwali Finding a New Home in America
The first episode is a story of Riyaaz Qawwali and Jones Family Singers, two Houston based ensembles. Singing Together, a qawwali and gospel collaboration, is a catalyst for the ensembles to build community, explore their art, and talk about race and religion. Experts from Harvard University, Smithsonian Museum, World Music Institute and University of Texas add important context for introducing qawwali, and its relationship to Gospel music.
Episode 2 : South Asians Reunite in America
The second episode is a story of Riyaaz Qawwali and Farah Sheikh as they explore qawwali music and kathak dance. In the episode, we discuss the South Asian immigrant experience and the lack of female voices within South Asian arts. Experts from Harvard University, Smithsonian Museum, World Music Institute and University of Texas help the audiences decipher important artistic, linguistic and cultural references.
